A Lesson Before Dying Chapter 8 Reflection

The school receives their first load of wood for the winter. Grant listens to the men play and tease each other while unloading the wood and punishes any student who looks out the window. However, when Grant goes to punish a student for looking out the window, the student tells Grant it is unfair because Grant, himself, looked out the window also.  As Grant watch the kids cut the wood, he goes on to reminisce to back when he was younger. He recalls the time when his teacher told him and his classmate that the only way to survive was to run, otherwise one would end up killed violently or brought down by the "levels of beasts".  Grant tells us that his teacher hated him because he was the only one who wanted to learn more and challenged him.
