A Lesson Before Dying Chapter 17-20 Reflection

Grant meets the new deputy, Paul, who is around his age. Paul answers all of Grants questions and is more respectful then the other deputies. Once Grant is in the cell with Jefferson, he realizes that Jefferson would never stop being sarcastic. He figures that Jefferson would only keep making it harder for him. Miss Emma convinces the sheriff to move Jefferson to a day room during visits, so they could have a place to sit. She still has trouble getting him to talk to her. Grant informs him about the Christmas program. But Jefferson is only concerned about dying on Christmas. The church was full for the Christmas program. A lot of people showed because they didn’t have no excuse not to be. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves except Grant. He wasn’t happy, instead he felt like everything was the same as the previous years. He wanted change like Vivian said. Jefferson’s death date is confirmed. It was set the second Friday after Easter. Grant is invited along with the reverend to hear the date in order to tell Miss Emma. However Grant refuses to be the one who has to tell her. He walks for miles to get his head straight.
