Grant goes to Miss Emma’s house for the fourth visit to see Jefferson, however she isn’t able to go. He recalls the previous times that they visited. Each time was repetitive check food, check pockets, walk down the corridor, give change, see Jefferson, Miss Emma cry, then leave. The fourth time Miss Emma pretended to be sick so she wouldn’t have to go and Grant made sure that they both knew he didn’t want to do it. He tries to make them feel bad by stating that the white men were only trying to humiliate him and now his aunt was helping them. As Miss Emma breaks down, Tante Lou stands her ground and tells him that he is the only one that can help.
